This is a statement in relation to the Fact Crescendo article on 'False Image Viral As Seat Allocation of General Election 2024', in order to present the full facts on LAcNet Election Projection operations.
During the 2024 Sri Lanka General Election, the main page of slelection.info (archived - https://slelection.info/2024) stated, "LAcNet Election Projection is an algorithm that projects the final outcome of the election by extrapolating available results at any given moment. These should not be regarded as official results."
The graph and the question mark symbol in the LAcNet Election Projection page (archived: https://slelection.info/2024/lacnet-projection.html) showed this additional information on hover/touch/click: "The projection is re-calculated when a new polling division result arrives. The graph shows those projections at each point. The vertical lines show the projection error, and the projection is estimated to be within the shaded area. Error bars are shown only for the top two parties."
The LAcNet Election Projection page had a summary table showing the projected seat numbers for the top four parties and the margin of error associated with each of those numbers. The number of available polling division results the projection was based on was stated together with a timestamp. The Projection Details table in the page showed the projected seat numbers for each district and for the National list. There was also a statement, "This is LAcNet's projection of the final outcome. It is not an official result."
Projections in the LAcNet Election Projection page were updated every time a polling division result was released.
Whenever the projection summary differed from the previous one, it was also posted to the LAcNet Election Projection facebook page (https://facebook.com/100069147491771) as a single image containing the summary table, detailed table, number of available results the projection was based on, the time stamp, and the statement "This is LAcNet's projection of the final outcome. It is not an official result." The title of the facebook post was "Projection of outcome of 2024 Sri Lanka General Election based on XX available results. http://slelection.info". Whenever a new projection was posted on facebook, the title of the previous post was modified and this statement was included: "** This post is old **. Check the latest at https://facebook.com/100069147491771"
The projection graph, which showed how the projection and the margin of error changed with the release of more polling division results, was also frequently posted to the LAcNet Election Projection facebook page.
The same projection image and the graph were also posted on the LAcNet Election Projection twitter account (https://x.com/LankaElection) with a lesser frequency due to posting limits on twitter.
The partial image mentioned in the Fact Crescendo article is available in full in the facebook post https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid028RKECq96tu7heLzaYuwjbEpTL7Z4VXTgcSP39WPkxchGFxN8n6XsZWBY5eXNqx2Cl&id=100069147491771
The title of the post includes, "Projection of outcome of 2024 Sri Lanka General Election based on 42 available results." The image has, "This is LAcNet's projection of the final outcome. It is not an official result", "Based on 42 available results out of total 182" and "02:42 SLST, 15 Nov 2024". The image also shows the following information as the projection of the number of seats with the margin of error:
It was a projection posted when only 42 polling division results were available. There have been many projections posted after this, until all 182 polling division results were announced. This particular post had its title amended at 02:44 SLST, 15 Nov 2024 to say, "** This post is old **. Check the latest at facebook.com/100069147491771"
In summary, LAcNet Election Projection had provided ample information to indicate that the image in question – similar to all the other images and tables posted by LAcNet Election Projection on web, facebook and twitter – was merely a projection at a given point in time, and was not an official result.
